Movements in May

It is a Melbourne truth universally acknowledged that as the days get shorter, the nights inevitably get longer. As such, activities across the city become all the more enticing, as we seek out hotspots to house ourselves between events.

There’s nothing quite like the mid-week outing, something to look forward to, something to discuss. Picture this - you’re strolling down Flinders Lane on your way to a little underground jazz trio, your lunch now a distant memory, and you’ve got time to kill. The reddish glow of the Supernormal signage catches your eye, and inside, the energy matches the excitement you have been building all day.

So you pop in and join the movement. Time constraints and a party of one? No issue here, as our dishes can be ordered as half serves, perfect for those pre-show refreshments where time is ever so slightly on the tight side.

Our Flinders Lane location means we’re never too far from the frivolities, and for the practical - a mere 5 minutes from Flinders Street Station.

We’ve taken it upon ourselves to compile a list of worthy pre-winter activities to sit alongside your reservation (or walk-in) at Supernormal.

Come for a show, stay for dinner (and get out of the chill).

Movements to Follow:

Beetlejuice The Musical at The Regent
If you’re one of the live people who doesn’t ignore the strange and the unusual, swing past Supernormal for a sip and snack before you take in this somewhat supernatural musical. The Tim Burton classic, long know for it’s chilling comedy and abundance of stripes, will fill your evening with the song and dance of the deceased and delirious.
191 Collins St, Melbourne 3000

Henry 5 at The Arts Centre
They’re calling it “Brave, Brutal and Breathless”, King Henry’s obsession with invading France, following a small yet clearly very significant jibe by the French prince, sets the scene for this epic tale by the Bard. Come celebrate King Hal’s victory post-play with a signature Supernormal dish, perhaps with a glass of something French?
100 St Kilda Rd, Southbank 3004

Sigur Rós at Hamer Hall
A performance worth waiting for, Sigur Rós comes to us nearly a decade later with the release of their latest album, ÁTTA, and what better way to experience the complexities of the band's musical compositions than with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Hamer Hall.
100 St Kilda Rd, Southbank 3004

Ayoung Kim Delivery Dancer's Arc at ACMI
A battle against the algorithm and the notion of faux productivity fed by time-flattening optimisation tools, this thrilling exposition utilises CGI and game engines to manufacture a narrative centred around the couriering of time across “deserts, cities and different dimensions”. On every day at ACMI, a mere skip across the lane from us, this ACMI commissioned piece is set to leave you contemplating the world we now live in.
185 Flinders Ln, Melbourne 3000

Distance Blues - Georgia Black, Craft Victoria
Exploring how contemporary art practice contributes to the growing environmental crisis, artist Georgia Black talks us through how the production of ceramics errs on the side of ecological error and extractivism. The exhibit forms part of our neighbour Craft Victoria’s ‘Conscious Craft’ movement and can be visited every day through to mid-June.
Craft, Watson Pl, Melbourne 3000
