The PONG Grand Slam

To celebrate the 2020 Australian Open, we joined forces with the Australian Centre of the Moving Image (ACMI), to bring PONG to the people!

From January 20th to February 2nd, Supernormal's basement was transformed into a neon-hued Japanese-style underground videogame arcade, fitted with consoles for guests to dual it out beyond the sweltering conditions of Rod Laver Arena.

The festivities continued upstairs in the restaurant, where an original 1972 PONG dual was projected on the walls.

One of the first ever video games to be developed, PONG was released by Atari in 1972 and imitates a simple back-and-forth game of top down tennis via 2D graphics.

Dedicated to preserving and celebrating video games just like PONG, ACMI has one of the few videogame preservation teams in Australia.

With ACMI temporarily closed for a major redevelopment, this was a chance for Supernormal guests to get a taste of what the museum has to offer before it reopens later this year.

We're open from 11.00am throughout the afternoon until late, seven days a week.
