WE ARE ALL STRANGERS
In Anthony Chen’s latest feature — the first Singaporean film ever selected in competition at the Berlinale — four lives quietly collide over meals, ambition, and emotional distance.
Junyang returns from military service uncertain of his future, clashing with his father Boon Kiat, whose modest noodle stall anchors his life. Junyang’s girlfriend Lydia, a gifted piano student, faces pressure at home as her relationship is questioned.
Meanwhile, Boon Kiat finds unexpected connection with Bee Hwa, a beer vendor whose presence slowly shifts his world. As these lives intertwine, Chen explores family — both biological and chosen — with tenderness, honesty, and emotional restraint.
Reuniting cast from Ilo Ilo and Wet Season, the film deepens his acclaimed “Growing Up” trilogy, offering a quietly powerful reflection on love, class, and connection in modern Singapore.
